Team Code of Ethics

A code of ethics is a code of behavior or conduct, justified according to a reasoned value system. The ASME provides us with a professional code of ethics.

Each team also has a code of ethics that defines guiding values for how they will work with each other in 2.009. Links are provided below.

 

Red team code of ethics
Fundamental Principles

  1. Team members shall aspire to create a product that reduces our environmental footprint.
  2. Team members shall strive to uphold the needs of the customer at all times.

Fundamental Canons

  1. Team members shall respect the opinions and contributions of their teammates and keep all criticism constructive.
  2. Team members shall make equal contributions towards the completion of the project while creating team awareness of their contributions.
  3. Team members shall finish work in a timely manner and be forthright if they do not finish the task.
  4. Team members shall show up to meetings on time and use meeting time efficiently.
  5. Team members shall not make arbitrary or uninformed design decisions.
  6. Team members shall respect the time commitments of other members of the team, and keep in mind that part of the goal of the project is to be a useful learning experience as a part of a class.

Green team code of ethics (alternative code of unethics)

  1. We shall uphold courtesy and professionalism in our interactions between ourselves and with others.
  2. We will get'er done, but if unable, will seek the assistance of team members.
  3. We shall bury our own dead, and uphold honesty and integrity in our work.
  4. We shall maintain a positive attitude while being pragmatic and logical in decision- making.
  5. We shall be open about our shortcomings and ask for help when needed.
  6. We shall use the wiki.
  7. We shall make decisions as democratically as possible.
  8. We shall have goals for all meetings, and team members will leave knowing what they're supposed to do.

Blue team code of ethics
The Fundamental Principles
Members of 2.009 Team Blue shall uphold and advance the integrity, honor, and dignity of our team project by:

  1. using their knowledge and skill to better the welfare of the client for their project and to decrease the human environmental impact.
  2. being honest and impartial, and serving with fidelity the public, their instructors, and clients.
  3. adhering unwaveringly to the most recent version of the ASME Code of Ethics.

The Fundamental Canons

  1. All purchases billed to the team budget shall be valid and applicable to the project at hand.
  2. Team members shall hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the customers, product users, instructors, and team members during the design and fabrication of the product.
  3. Team members shall provide truthful and accurate information pertaining to the project during reviews and presentations.
  4. Team members shall respectful and courteous to all other members, instructors, and customers.

Yellow team code of ethics
The Fundamental Principles

Yellow Engineers will uphold and advance the integrity of their team by:

  1. using their knowledge to better serve others.
  2. remaining honest, impartial, and respectful.
  3. striving to learn and develop their skills as engineers.

The Fundamental Canons
Yellow Engineers shall:

  1. use resources effectively and respectfully, whether they are the team funds, a teammate's time, or a professor's aid.
  2. be transparent about what they do and do not know, and honestly represent all work.
  3. work independently of personal conflicts and maintain a cooperative spirit to meeting key goals and deadlines.
  4. be respectful of others and be open to their ideas.
  5. consider the global, social, and environmental implications of their work.
  6. make major decisions only after all proper research has been done and the consent of the team has been obtained.

Orange team code of ethics

  1. Be respectful of your teammates and their time.
  2. Be willing to help other people with their tasks.
  3. Honor your commitments.
  4. Make decisions objectively based on the validity of ideas and information.
  5. We will work to ensure the safety, health and welfare of the public and our teammates.
  6. Decisions should only be made after everyone feels that they have had an adequate chance to contribute.
  7. Two thirds of the team must agree (be comfortable with the fairness and objectivity of the selection process) on a decision before it can become active.
  8. Put the success of the team and the end product before the individual.
  9. Voice dissenting opinions as soon as possible.

Purple team code of ethics
The Fundamental Principles

Engineers of Team Purple for 2.009—Product Design and Development—uphold and advance the integrity, honor and dignity of the engineering profession, especially our department, university, and society by:

  1. using their knowledge and skill to develop environmentally friendly products;
  2. being honest and impartial while serving the best interests of the team;
  3. striving to develop personally and professionally all team members.

The Fundamental Cannons

  1. Members shall be receptive of others’ ideas by listening carefully before carrying out judgment.
  2. Members shall notify the entire team about missing a scheduled meeting, making sure to use honest reasons and to be flexible about future meeting times.
  3. Members shall complete delegated tasks on time and promptly notify the team with problems and delays.
  4. Members shall proactively work to solve managerial and engineering problems that arise with a positive attitude.
  5. Members shall be honest about making mistakes and immediately report them to the team without fear.
  6. Members shall speak their opinions and thoughts honestly, ignoring the temptation to simply say what others expect to hear.
  7. Members shall be objective when critiquing ideas, making sure to leave politics out by separating individuals from ideas.
  8. Members shall execute actions which reflect the best interest of the entire team.
  9. Members shall define team success as fulfilling team goals set by a team consensus.
  10. Members shall maintain the 2.009 standard of ethical purchasing.

Silver team code of ethics
The Silver Team from MIT’s 2.009 class has adopted the following Code of Ethics to produce the best working environment for our team.

Fundamental Principles
The Silver Team pledges to uphold and enhance the standards of the 2.009 class as well as the integrity and dignity of the mechanical engineering profession by:

  1. using their knowledge and skill to identify and solve critical unmet needs in the world in a sustainable, objective, and efficient manner
  2. building and enhancing their learning inside of and outside of the classroom
  3. striving to increase the reputation and prestige of their class, their institute and their profession

The Fundamental Canons

  1. Team members will act and think honestly and impartially
  2. Team members will always consider safety first and foremost
  3. Team members will maintain clear and open communication as a group and between members at all times
  4. Team members will be respectful
    1. of all team members, staff, and clients
    2. of their own time and others’ time
    3. while listening to others
  5. Team members will avoid excessive praise of the team, the customers, and the products
  6. Team members will maintain a high and consistent quality of work
  7. Team members will address problems quickly and decisively by:
    1. notifying other team members if they acting incorrectly
    2. speaking up if something is not right
    3. being able to accept constructive criticism of themselves and their products
    4. being aware of their own limitations and letting teammates be aware of them as well
  8. Team members will work to advance the team’s goals at all times.
  9. Team members will respect and abide by each customer’s local customs.
